Japanese bourse descended in the morning session following reports that the US is planning a ground operation against Iran, intensifying market concerns over the potential economic repercussions of further Middle East tensions.

A large number of local stocks went ex-dividend today. The Nikkei, by midday, collapsed 2,436 points or 4.6%, closing at 50,936.

In the AI and semiconductor sectors, SoftBank (9984.JP) tumbled 9.2%, Advantest (6857.JP) and Disco (6146.JP) slid 7.3% and 6.2%, respectively, while Lasertec (6920.JP) dived 2.2%. Tokyo Electron (8035.JP) and Kioxia (285A.JP) slipped 4.5% and 3.8%.

The Bank of Japan stated that it is closely monitoring the yen's movements and will adjust its policy accordingly. The US dollar ebbed against the yen, last quoted at 159.79, after reaching 160.46 in the morning session.
